What is trailing and why are we different?

What is trailing?

Trailing, or mantrailing as it is sometimes called, is a discipline where a dog is given a scent sample to follow. The dog must first indicate that a trail exists, then follow it—not hunt or search randomly—until locating the matching person.

Simply put - it is hide and seek for your dog.

Why are we different?

We practice the sport of trailing the way professionals do. We do not mix disciplines or rely on shortcuts and tools that make the work easier for the handler. Success in this sport is measured in your ability to work as a team. .

We are the only trailing trainers actively practicing trailing with SAR teams and attending trailing seminars ourselves. We prioritize learning and partner to bring trailing professionals for opportunities to advance your learning.

What does this mean?

We put in the work—studying scent theory, terrain and weather and how that affects trails, how to properly lay trails, flanking, communication, and reading the body language of both your dog and others from day 1.

We understand that plans can change. Our goal is to be as fair and transparent as possible while maintaining the integrity of our sessions. If you or your dog are sick or injured, please reach out.

Deposit:

A 25% deposit is required to secure your spot in a session.

Refunds:

More than 4 weeks before session start - Full refund less a $25 administrative fee.

Within 4 weeks of the session start - If no replacement participant is found, your deposit is non-refundable.

Before You Register:

We strongly encourage all new participants to attend a practice or lesson at least one month prior to the start of your session—or as soon as possible following your enquiry. This ensures you understand what trailing looks like and what is expected.

If you choose not to attend a practice or lesson and later decide not to continue after your session has begun, no refund will be issued.

Trailing is a physically demanding sport. Participants must be in good health and capable of walking and standing for extended periods of time. Because our sessions are limited and intentionally structured, your spot matters. If you need to cancel, please reach out as early as possible so we can work to fill your place.

Make-Up Sessions:

Make-up sessions may be offered on a case-by-case basis.  All make-ups are dependent on instructor availability as well as space within existing courses or practices. As such, scheduling is not guaranteed and may be limited.

For sessions held outside of the Lower Mainland, make-ups will not be provided unless another introductory session is scheduled in that area. In most cases, students will be required to travel to the Lower Mainland to complete a make-up session.

Registration & Payment:

Your spot in a session is not guaranteed until your deposit has been received. Deposits can be made by e-transfer to info@k9trailing. ca (please include your name and session start date).

A 25% deposit is required to secure your spot. Due to limited space and high demand, spots are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.  We generally do not keep a waitlist.
